Inside of a cell there are mainly potassium ions and organic anions, on the outside above all chloride and sodium ions. As a rule the inner part of the cell is hence negative and the outer part positive. This electric potential difference — which is called also the resting potential of the cell — ranges between -40 and -75 millivolts for mammalian neurons. Normally this resting potential would continuously decrease over time, as sodium ions constantly move into the cell. To prevent this and to keep the resting potential constant, these sodium ions are actively transported out of the cell. For this purpose there are transport proteins situated within the cell membrane — the so called carriers. As these carriers are also able to actively transport potassium ions from the surroundings into the inner part of the cell, they are called the sodium-potassium-pump.
